Attention all family members of future NBA stars! The P.E. teachers at Solomon are organizing a basketball team to participate in the Leilehua Complex Drug Free Education Basketball Tournament at Leilehua High School Gym on Friday, February 28 2014.

The basketball team will consist of 15 students (from grades 3rd, 4th, and 5th), both boys and girls (a minimum of 2 girls will be on the court at all times during games). Teammates will be chosen by the following qualities: sportsmanship, skill level, following game rules, and effort to improve, both on the basketball court and in the classroom. Practices will be held on January 31 and February 3, 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 21, 24, 25, 26, and 27; all practices will take place after school until 3:30pm.

Participants must have a valid, complete physical exam on file with the school, and they must have a parent/guardian sign and return a permission slip and Assumption of Risk form. For more information, including picking up any of the required paperwork, please see the P.E. teachers, Mr. Bell and Ms. Yordi.

Best of luck to all of our aspiring basketball stars! We know you'll represent Solomon Elementary well in the tournament!

Donations Needed!

It has been brought to our attention that the school nurse at Solomon is in need of clothing donations to stock in the nurse's office.  Specifically, she is looking for sizes that range from 2T all the way up through Adult Medium.  So if anyone has a few extra shirts, pairs of pants, etc. taking up room in the back of their closet and you don't mind parting with them for a good cause, please bring them in to the nurse's office.  Thank you!

Upcoming Events

Happy Friday, everyone!  Before we jump into the weekend, here is a look at what is coming up in the next couple of weeks.  There are quite a few different activities and volunteer opportunities that you will want to take note of, so read on!

Monday January 27 - Volunteer Orientation
***Volunteer Orientation is required of EVERY volunteer at Solomon***
Volunteer Orientation is held every Monday in P-1 at 8:15am.  If you cannot make it to the orientation, please let us know.  We are more than happy to schedule a one-on-one orientation at a time that is convenient for both parties.

Tuesday January 28 - Paws Store
If anyone is looking to start picking up volunteer hours, the Paws Store is the perfect place to do it!  We need at least 2-3 volunteers from 9:30am-10:00am and 4-5 volunteers from 11:40am-1:05pm.

Monday February 3 - Volunteer Orientation & Holiday Grams go on sale
The Solomon PTSO will be selling Holiday Grams in P-1 for $1.00 each.  Holiday grams are holiday-themed cutouts that can be decorated and sent to anyone within the school.  When delivered, the gram will also include a small healthy snack for the recipient.  All deliveries will be made on February 14, making this a perfect opportunity to send your sweetheart(s) a special Valentine message!

Tuesday February 4 - Paws Store

Monday February 10 - Volunteer Orientation (at 8:15am in P-1)

Tuesday February 11 - Paws Store

Wednesday February 12 - Dominos Fundraiser
Take the night off and let Dominos do the cooking!  The Dominos on Schofield is generously giving 10% of their entire day's sales to the Solomon PTSO.  Order anything off of the menu, from pizza to pasta - it's that simple!

Friday February 14 - Holiday Grams delivered & Jump Rope for Heart

Solomon is once again raising funds for children with heart diseases and promoting health awareness and active lifestyles through its annual Jump Rope for Heart event.  All grade levels will be participating in the Jump-A-Thon throughout the day; last year, Solomon raised almost $5,000 and we are excited to try and match (and even exceed) that amount this year!  Look for more information to be shared as the event draws nearer.  We will need a few extra volunteers to help ensure the event runs smoothly, so please let us know if you are interested in helping out!

Monday February 17 - NO SCHOOL!  Happy President's Day!

Tuesday February 18 - Paws Store

Wednesday February 19 - Evacuation Drill
Solomon will be participating in a "Whole School Off-Campus Evacuation Drill" on this day.  The exercise is tentatively scheduled to begin at 8:20am (weather permitting).  This exercise will involve the students leaving the campus and walking down to the CYS building and back; this drill has been approved and is supported by the U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii/CBRNE.  Exercises such as this are extremely important for our staff and students, as they provide practice opportunities that will hopefully ensure their safety in a "real life" event, should that ever occur.  PLEASE NOTE - During the time of the drill, the office will be closed and children will NOT be released during the duration of the exercise.  If you need to pick up your child (for any reason), it is asked that you do so after 9:45am.

Monday February 24 - Volunteer Orientation

Tuesday February 25 - Paws Store

Wednesday February 26 - New Parent Coffee
New Parent Coffee is a program offered by the Transition Center at Solomon.  Parents of new students (and even parents of students who have been here for a while) are invited to stop by for a brief presentation about the resources available to their families through the school and the greater Schofield community.  The atmosphere is casual, the coffee is hot, and the information you'll receive will surely help make your time here in Hawaii extra special!

As always, if you ever have any questions or concerns, you are more than welcome to bring to them to us in P-1.  Our hours are:
9:00am-1:00pm on Mon, Tues, Thurs, & Fri
*CLOSED on Wednesdays*

Parent Programs At ACS

Looking for a way to get out of the house and socialize with other parents? ACS (Army Community Services) has some great programs available for soliders and their families to attend! We thought we'd take a moment to highlight a few of these terrific (and FREE) programs being currently offered.

The Wahine Walk & Roll is a program for women held every Friday morning from 8:30-9:30am. The program meets at the track near Ralston Field (near Foote gate/the fire station) and provides women an opportunity to get in some exercise, meet new people, and engage in a little girl talk. If you are interested in attending or have any questions, contact Tina with the New Parent Support Program at 655-4ACS.

For parents looking to engage their children in a safe, structured, and social setting, the New Parent Support Program also offers bi-monthly play groups. These play groups are held every 1st and 3rd Wednesday from 10:00am to 11-:00am at the ACS Building on Schofield (Bldg 2091 Kolekole Ave). Not only do the kids get to play, but moms and dads can also meet other parents and make new friends - a win-win situation for all! To register, contact (808)-655-4ACS.

In observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, there will be no school on Monday, January 20.

UPCOMING FEBRUARY EVENTS:

Looking ahead to next month, the Solomon PTSO will be selling holiday grams for $1.00 apiece. Sales will begin on Monday, February 3 in P-1. For those unfamiliar with holiday grams, they are holiday-themed cut outs that can be decorated and sent to anyone within the school. When delivered, the gram will also include a small healthy snack for the recipient. All deliveries will be made on Friday, February 14. So stop on by and send a Valentine to your sweetheart!

The book fair that was scheduled to take place in February has unfortunately been cancelled. But don't worry, there will be another opportunity to grab some great reading material at the book fair in April! Keep your eyes peeled for more information in the future!

Additionally, Wednesday, February 12 will be our next Dominos fundraiser. Participation couldn't be easier - simply place an order with Dominos on Schofield and 10% of the ENTIRE day's sales will be generously given to the Solomon PTSO. What an easy (and delicious) way to help raise funds for a group that works very hard to provide fun activities for our student body!
